ECOLOGY CLASS
What are you excited about learning in your tropical ecology class?
I am interesting about biome in Guatemala, and know what is the relationship between plants and animals. Have a better understand about our planet, for example: why in the tropical region have 12 hours of sun and 12 hours of night?.
What is one of the main environmental issues your community Experiences?
The main environmental issue that San Miguel Chicaj, Baja Verapaz is facing is deforestation. Since I am out of my community I realized that people should work on reforestation areas because there are many places that still have a very high type of soil, and where we can plant some trees. San Miguel Chicaj was an area with a dry and wet forest through the years people, and companies have been deforesting large forests. Now the population are complaining because of the climate change, Why?most of them are agriculture's and harvesting activities are declining.
What things have you learned thus far to help improve the environmental conditions of your community?
I have been taken couple classes that has topics related to reforestation such as how to prepare a site preparation, soil interaction, composting styles and forest measurement. These topics I already put it into practice in order to increase my knowledge about reforestation. I am planning to have a workshop with my community about composting style, so people can know how to have a better soil, and how a seed can germinate with all the organic materials that contribute. The result of the workshop will be that people can grow their own food with a good fertilizer.
